Human Immunodeficiency Virus. HIV does not mean that someone has AIDS. Someone may have HIV for many years without getting AIDS. AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) comes about when your T-helper cell (what HIV attacks) count falls below 200. Some people remain AIDS free while still infected with HIV for a long time. During this time, however, it is still possible to pass the virus on to others.
